Proving Infinitude of Prime Numbers Using Binomial Coefficients

چکیده

We study the problem of proving in weak theories of Bounded Arithmetic the theorem that there are arbitrarily large prime numbers. We show that the theorem can be proved by some “minimal” reasoning (i.e., in the theory I∆0) using concepts such as (the logarithm) of a binomial coefficient. In fact we prove Bertrand’s Postulate (that there is at least a prime number between n and 2n, for all n > 1) and the fact that the number of prime numbers between n and 2n is of order Θ(n/ ln(n)). The proofs that we formalize are much simpler than several existing formalizations, and our theory turns out to be a sub-theory of a recent theory proposed by Woods and Cornaros that extends I∆0 by a special counting function.

From Euclid to Present: A Collection of Proofs regarding the Infinitude of Primes

Prime numbers are considered the basic building blocks of the counting numbers, and thus a natural question is: Are there infinitely many primes? Around 300BC, Euclid demonstrated, with a proof by contradiction, that infinitely many prime numbers exist. Since his work, the development of various fields of mathematics has produced subsequent proofs of the infinitude of primes. Each new and uniqu...

On Divisibility Properties of Some Differences of the Central Binomial Coefficients and Catalan Numbers

We discuss divisibility properties of some differences of the central binomial coefficients and Catalan numbers. The main tool is the application of various congruences modulo high prime powers for binomial coefficients combined with some recurrence relevant to these combinatorial quantities.

On Prime Divisors of Binomial Coefficients

This paper, using computational and theoretical methods, deals with prime divisors of binomial coefficients: Geometric distribution and number of distinct prime divisors are studied. We give a numerical result on a conjecture by Erdôs on square divisors of binomial coefficients.

Squarefree Smooth Numbers and Euclidean Prime Generators

We show that for each prime p > 7, every residue mod p can be represented by a squarefree number with largest prime factor at most p. We give two applications to recursive prime generators akin to the one Euclid used to prove the infinitude of primes.

On the Infinitude of Lucas Pseudoprimes

It is well-known that properties (1) and (2) are satisfied if n is prime. If (1) is satisfied for some composite n, then n is called a Fibonacci pseudoprime (or FPP). If (2) is satisfied for some composite n, then n is called a Lucas pseudoprime (or LPP). Let U and V denote the sets of FPP's and LPP's, respectively. It must be remarked that, the above terminology is different from that used by ...
